A week and a half ago, the FBI released its final crime data for 2023. But the news media completely missed how the FBI had revised its “final” crime data for previous years. For a year, the media claimed that violent crime fell in 2022. Oops! What had originally been a 2.1% drop in reported violent crime turned out to be a 4.5% increase. By the way, that increase in 2022 was bigger than the claimed 3.5% drop in 2023. I have previously discussed the problems with the FBI’s measure of reported crime, but you would think that after a year of using the 2022 crime data to claim that crime was falling, someone in the media would mention they were wrong. I wrote an op-ed in the New York Post that goes through these points and explains why even these amazing numbers are an underestimate. I will make one other startling point: the FBI’s 2022 “final” crime data somehow missed the increase of 1,699 increase in murders in 2022.

An op-ed of mine was published at Real Clear Politics that discussed the shocking new crime data on illegal immigrants. But while these numbers got some attention in the conservative media, everyone missed what this implied — that 9 percent of the non-detained illegal immigrants were criminals and that the murder rate for these people was at least twice the murder rate of Americans. But I explain why even these numbers are dramatic underestimates. I also discussed this on NewsMax’s Greg Kelly Show.

Other op-eds that I wrote discussed how AI Chatbots put out Democrat narratives on crime and gun control and how the media pushes misleading crime stats to protect Democrats. This last op-ed led to radio interviews with Lars Larson, a couple of interviews on D.C.’s WMAL, the Michigan Talk Network, and Washington Watch with Tony Perkins. There was also an interview by Tangle with myself and a couple of people on the left about whether violent crime has increased under the Biden administration.

I also did a number of interviews on Georgia school shooting to discuss whether the father should be held criminally liable for the son’s actions. That included WMAL, San Diego’s giant 50,000-watt KCBQ, and Denver’s Chuck and Julie show.

By the way, with all the focus on the FBI’s measure murder rate, the murder rate rose by 11.23% between 2019 and 2023.

One amusing quote about me was put out by Peter Kirsanow, a commissioner on the U.S. Civil Rights Commission: “Lott has testified before the commission several times during my tenure. Of the hundreds of witnesses who’ve appeared before the commission during that time, no one has been treated with greater hostility by progressives than he. I’d long suspected that such treatment was due to his usually bringing hard data to the table — which are more difficult for progressives to refute/spin than mere opinion.”
